Mk III Continentals are rare in the UK, with only a handful having been imported. Later Lincoln coupes are more plentiful, but have much larger federal regulation bumpers, which compromises the original lines. These iconic cars were used in several films including The French Connection (DVD comes with car!), and were always driven by the bad guys. All the mechanical components are standard Ford bits, so they are relatively easy to maintain and consumables are not expensive. They are powered by a 460ci (7.5l) 365bhp V8, driving through a C6 three speed autobox. The brakes are ventilated discs at the front, with large drums at the rear. This example was imported into the UK from California around seven years ago, so is essentially rust free and has never been welded. It has spent some while standing in the US, though clearly not outside. I bought it two years ago, and during that time have done just over 5000 miles in it, using it on a regular basis for both short and long journeys. During that time I have replaced both front tyres, the starter motor, alternator, battery, power steering box & pump, starter ring gear, handbrake cables, all four shock absorbers, rear brake flexible & pipes, both rear silencers, belts, filters, plugs etc. I have also done much work on the electrics and replaced two window switches, and got the instruments and aircon working. I have all the receipts for the work done, totally over £3000. The paintwork looks really good from ten feet away, but has some micro-blistering, and an area behind the rear wheels is lifting. There are also some other small paint defects. The car is straight, though the panel fit around the bonnet is poor. All the exterior trim is present and original. The chrome on the bumpers is a bit faded, but polishes up ok. The interior is completely original with no rips or tears on the seats, and only minor wear. The motor looks to have been replaced at some time (probably with a ‘crate’ motor, as everything is in the same shade of blue) and runs really well, quietly and with no smoke/ knocks etc, and it never overheats. The C6 changes smoothly. The car is a real hoot to drive, with bags of power, great brakes, and excellent roadholding. It is a big car, so the handling can take some getting used to, especially in supermarket car parks. It comes with a genuine workshop manual, and some minor spares. It still has some electrical issues – mainly earthing problems, and the charging indicator doesn’t work. I have had all the seat & window motors out and they all work perfectly, so it is nothing expensive. The wiper motor can also be unreliable (though it works). The tilt steering column is also worn, (I have had it apart and repaired the pawl once, but it needs looking at again). In an ideal world a new stainless steel exhaust system would be on the list, though the one on the car has no holes and is fine. I am not interested in a part exchange. This is a great car, and you will not find another one in the UK or the US at anything like this price!
