Beastie little 4 speed 1.9 petrol engine is punchy and happily cruises at 80 m.p.h, she has lovely handling and turns on a coin. It is possible to fit overdrive however, I have strived to preserve her as an original working car, by maintaining and retaining as many original features as possible in factory release 1972. To be in such a good condition belies the care it has received over the years. These things make YTT519K a pretty unusual car. Due to the exceptional Swedish build quality, many of the 144’s were saught after for boxcar racing. They are really starting to become popular now and there are not many available, especially right hand drive. Very similar to the Volvo Amazon, its near predecessor, the Volvo 144 has the same solid chassis as the Amazon 120 series. The engine has some improvements, however remains very similar. Having sat for 3 months at one point, she started up straight away. The Volvo engine has very long legs, which means it performs well over long distance and sustained speed which isn’t true for many older vehicles. This car has been my daily driver and I’ve always felt confident about going distance in her with the kids. Boudicca, as we have called her has been the cover girl for a Volvo models guide manual and cover girl for Volvo Owners Club magazine. This would be an amazing set piece for films, advertising or the best kind of adventure. Everywhere she goes, Boudicca is a conversation piece and people regularly stop to take pictures whilst we wait at traffic lights and crossings. I made a brief walk round tour prior to cleaning her up, which is slightly the wrong way round, however, I feel it gives a really honest overview of Boudicca. I will detail all the work/parts etc below, and also areas with room for improvement as can be seen here clearly. Also the engine sounds great!! The video also shows the amazing underneath. It is the cleanest Volvo chassis I’ve ever seen ( other mechanical friends have also remarked on this) Work Done • New Clutch, clutch kit and bearings. • Front and rear shock absorbers (springs in amazing condition) • Four new tyres + good spare • Brakes and calipers • Sump and rocker cover gaskets • Sml weld inside boot behind wheel arch. • Repair to nose/wing damage and historic 80’s collision into rear wing by a bicycle late 80's and resprayed 109 chlorophyll. • Tail pipe welded (new set included for future use) • Rust on rear arches welded and sprayed as above. Everything is original on the dash and also works very well, including the Volvo clock and Volvo period radio. There is no sun splitting. The heating system is awesome and would keep you warm in a Swedish snowstorm. The interior has the original carpets in green without visible wear and 4 x protective mats. Snow mats in the boot. Carpet would benefit from a steam valet. All upholstery is in excellent condition apart from wear showing on drivers side seat bottom where the vinyl has cracked along the stiching and on the shoulder of the seat, due to sun damage. New owner could easily tidy with a replacement piece of suede/leatherette/vinyl over the shoulders. Body All the panels are original. There is very little rust a testament to her spending most of life garaged. Door furniture is all present including window winders, window clips and armrests. In the boot there is the original Volvo Jack. The jacking points are in first class condition as is all the underside. There is a Stainless steel locking fuel cap. Front seat belts are standard, rear seat belts attached. Improvements I haven’t got to yet. • One front wing trim came loose and got bent (children!) it is temporarily pop-riveted on to prevent it coming loose, however, simply needs a couple of new trim ‘clips’ and a new piece. • My intention was to recover front seat shoulders in turquoise suede. • The rubber is all original (apart from much of the engine) and I had intended to replace the lot. It is sufficient at present. There are a couple of lower window slides missing, although these are not expensive. • Drivers seat, lower portion has a couple of straight splits. • There are some areas of mild surface rust. It is all visible in the pics/vid. Wheel arches/sills/wings etc all fantastic though. This car could easily be restored into a top show condition with a little effort and minimum expense. No road tax and cheap Historic insurance. All spare parts are available in the UK and there is a very good owners club with national events. Boudicca has done several turns at Cornish car shows and attracted lots of attention because of her colour and all original look. She would happily continue as a daily driver and is very cheap to run at around 32 m.p.g I have found, having owned several vintage Volvos over the years, that these rarely need new parts, and when they do, they are neither expensive to buy or to fit compared to modern cars. I will be very sad to see her go, but due to work changes, finances and a young family, I no longer have time to play with the old girl.
