Very good condition. Recent new crank and top end rebuild with new gaskets, washers and nuts. Excellent engine, clutch, gearbox and brakes. Body is very good with no rust problems. The usual Trabant rust areas, sills, firewall, battery tray, boot and floor are all totally solid. Underneath the car has been rustproofed and is totally solid. The seats have been reupholstered in navy blue and have no rips or tears. I've also put a new braided metal fuel line in with an aluminium fuel bowl (see pic) as the threads weren't great on the plastic one it had. Also had new plugs, plug leads and a new battery this week.. Car is UK registered and has a current mot until August 2019. It has only done 250 km since last test and rebuild. The Trabant is a true classic people's car that were built in East Germany from 1957 to 1990 with only minor changes. It has a 600cc two stroke engine that has only 5 moving parts, 2 pistons, two con rods and the crankcase. Very simple cars with no fuel pump, distributor, timing belt, valves etc. Very 1950s and a really iconic car. Fuel is gravity fed from tank to carburettor. The engine is closely related to DKW engines, but with air-cooling. The column gear change is a unique feature. This car has the nicer dashboard type from the 1970s (very rare) and a cigarette lighter (which was a factory option). It also has a Javelin period radio (not connected). The car is 12v and has a simple form of electronic ignition fitted that still uses points, but stops them from pitting and takes the load of the condensers. It's the only Trabant for sale currently in Ireland and it's hard to get them now in good condition and that aren't tatty. Any footage of the Berlin Wall coming down shows hordes of these cars driving through the border from East to West Germany. The band U2 used them too in their actung baby tour. All parts are available for these cars, even body panels. I have some spares to go with the car Inc spare plugs, fan belt and two sets of points. There's also loads of clubs and online forums. They're fun to drive, like a road legal bumper car and simple to maintain. I've had 3 of these cars ànd have too many projects so that's why it's for sale. I won't however give it away and am in no hurry to sell it. The car is cheap for its condition and rarity. You'll go a long way to get another as good.
